Yes — you can use another brand of primer or clear coat with ScratchesHappen paint. We color-match the tint of our primer to your specific paint, so if you choose to use a different primer, we recommend finding one with the same tint as the primer we shipped in your kit (primer tint affects how the final color reads). Regarding clear coats, we have only tested our products for color match and durability, so we can't make any guarantees about other clear coats.
Using a Different Primer
Primer tint affects how the final color of your touch-up reads — for bright reds, oranges, yellows, and other transparent pigments, it can make a visible difference. We tint our primer to match the recommendation in your paint formula. If you'd like to use another primer, find one with the same tint (white, medium gray, or black) as the primer we shipped in your kit.
For more on why primer tint matters, see Why Primer Color Matters for Your Touch-Up Color Match.
Using a Different Clear Coat
We have only tested our products for color match and durability, so we can't make any guarantees about other clear coats.
FAQ
What if I have leftover primer from another project?
You can use it as long as it has a similar tint to the primer we would ship in the new color kit.
If you're not sure which tint your new color uses, contact Support and we'll confirm.
Can I use a clear coat from another vendor?
You can — but we've only tested our paint with our own clear coat, so the result on color match and durability with another clear coat is unknown.
